How to Store AdBlue® Correctly: 5 Rules for Preserving Quality

Buying AdBlue® is only half the job — storing it correctly afterward matters just as much. Improperly stored AdBlue® loses shelf life faster and can even damage vehicle sensors. Here’s what to keep in mind.

1. Temperature Control Is Essential

AdBlue®’s freezing point is -11 °C. Freezing doesn’t damage the product — it can be used again once thawed — but repeated freeze-thaw cycles can affect the solution’s homogeneity over time. The ideal storage range is -11 °C to +25 °C. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures (especially above 30 °C, in direct sunlight) accelerates urea decomposition.

2. Keep It Away from Direct Sunlight

UV light can gradually break down the urea in AdBlue® into ammonia. That’s why it’s best stored in a closed, shaded area — ideally in its original, opaque packaging.

3. Avoid Contamination

AdBlue® is a high-purity urea solution. Contact with dust, metal particles, oil, or other liquids can render it unusable. To prevent this:

  • Use clean equipment (funnels, pumps, hoses) dedicated exclusively to AdBlue®.
  • Reseal containers tightly after every use.
  • For IBC tanks or bulk storage, make sure the tank was never previously used for another chemical.

4. Track the Shelf Life

Under proper storage conditions, AdBlue® has a shelf life of at least 12 months. Keeping track of the production date and recommended usage period matters both for vehicle performance and for getting the most out of your investment.

5. Storage by Packaging Type

PackagingStorage Recommendation

Conclusion

Properly stored AdBlue® protects both your vehicle’s SCR system and your budget. For fleet managers and businesses ordering in bulk, Enida Kimya offers technical guidance on storage alongside our IBC tank and bulk delivery options.
